That’s what the mainstream media is all about, distracting people from the important news by putting these meaningless news. Thankfully there are people who find a way to reach an audience and enlighten them over what is happening around the world.
Honestly I don’t think the Main stream media does it to distract people. It’s just natural selection. Celebrity news and cats sell far better than a in depth articles about refugee problems in the central African republic. So news new sources who run serious stories go out of business, and ones who run stories about cats don’t. I mean look at how well Buzzfeed is doing.
It’s easy to try and blame it on intentional malfeasance, but I think it has a whole lot more to do with the fact that news is now a purely for-profit infotainment business.
As optimistic as I’d like to be about the world, given the choice between reading about something stupid but entertaining, like celebrity gossip, or confusing international politics, more people are going to pick the entertainment. And if you’re in business to make money, you run the entertainment.
Everybody (rightly) mocked CNN for their ridiculous MH370 coverage, but the fact is the ratings were really good, so from a business standpoint they were showing people what they wanted to see.
Newspapers used to be sort of segregated between gossip and real news, but with the business dying, the “real news” papers have gotten desperate for whatever will sell a copy.
Unfortunately, a joke study I made in my school back in 2002 showed me that we use newspapers for three things:
1- To read political news, celebrities new, sports new, and solve puzzles only>
2- We use it as a cleaning cloth for windows.
3- Cover Sheets either for our tables or anything else.
In a way it is a two-way street, they post what we encourage them to. True that media bombards us with such silly meaningless stuff and what is far more important gets buried under tons of crap but we r a market too. I mean if it didn’t sell they wouldn’t have pushed it this extensively
You stopped short of completing the full idea of how “journalism” works today.
The next panels should show the “journalist” compromising all integrity to simply reprint government propaganda in return for the money and an easier job. No more having to dig for news in the trash when the trash IS the news and its delivered to you, no editing or digging for truth necessary!

Great comic as alwats Sareen keep it up.
Many thanks Elias! Hopefully the audience never gets distracted by the “non”-news.

I always used to make this joke, that the only reason newspapers are still around is because we need them to clean our windows!
Unfortunately the media, and the public, keep making stupid people famous.
So a career move soon b4 it is later than late?
