Luckily my only victim was a car I smashed on the sidewalk of a highway curve. I fell asleep while driving. The sidewalk and the angle I hit it with absorbed the shock and left me unharmed. After the incident I pondered the other potential outcomes in light of the innumerable variables that could have been slightly different; speed, angle, time, location, people, cars, pavement, bridges, etc.. Although I became much more vigilant and adopted better practices I still drove myself or was a passenger with other drunk drivers on a few occasions. The real wake up call came when I lost a friend a few months ago to a drunk driving incident; ever since cabs became the only ride I would take after a night out. Unfortunately, I believe technology is the only real solution for this problem. Awareness campaigns and strict laws will never resolve it as humans overestimate the amount of control they have over their environment and underestimate the feebleness of their existence; and both beliefs are only compounded when judgement is impaired by the effects of alcohol.
